Radley College offers a structured and academically ambitious curriculum that evolves as boys move through the school. It focuses on building intellectual curiosity, independence, and strong study habits.

Shell Year (Year 9)
Boys follow a broad curriculum including English, Maths, Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), History, Geography, Design Engineering, Art, Music, Latin or Classical Civilisation, Theology, Critical Thinking, and IT. They also choose two languages from French, Spanish, and German.

Years 10–11 (Remove and Fifth)
Pupils prepare for GCSE/IGCSEs. In this year, they take English Language, Maths, and either Combined Science or three separate sciences.
They also choose four subjects from a range that includes Art, Drama, History, Geography, Latin, Spanish, Theology, and more.
Generally, the school encourages a balanced subject mix, including at least one language, one humanity, and one creative option.

Sixth Form
Students usually study three or four A-Level subjects. The programme allows for deeper exploration of academic interests while preparing boys for university and future careers.

Support
All new students complete diagnostic tests to assess their learning needs.
Those needing extra help receive tailored support, both during and outside lessons.

Boarding at Radley College

Boarding is at the heart of Radley life, offering a strong sense of community and a structured but supportive environment. Unlike many schools, all boys board, meaning friendships and routines develop naturally within a fully residential setting.

Students live in boarding houses known as Socials, each home to around 70 boys across all year groups. Younger students (Shells) share rooms, helping them settle in, while older boys move into single study bedrooms, giving them more privacy and independence.

Each Social is a tight-knit unit, guided by a Housemaster, pastoral team, and a team of Dons (Radley’s term for teachers). Boys quickly feel part of their Social, forming strong bonds and developing a sense of belonging. Housemasters play a key role in academic and personal development, ensuring every boy is supported.

Evenings and weekends are lively. With top-class facilities and a packed sports, music, and activities programme, students are always engaged. Socials also organise regular events, from quiz nights to house competitions, adding to the Radley experience.

Parents stay involved too. They are encouraged to visit, and the school makes sure families feel connected through regular updates and live-streamed events.

Extracurricular Activities at Radley College

Radley offers an incredible range of activities, with something for everyone. The school’s commitment to music and the arts is evident, especially with the new music school. Half the boys learn an instrument, and the Chapel Choir has 120 members, including some of the First XV rugby squad. Singing is cool here, and major productions are live-streamed for overseas parents. Bands and ensembles release their music via Radley Records on Spotify, and those not drawn to classical music can even learn DJ-ing. Recent productions include Sweeney Todd, performed in collaboration with Didcot High.

The art and design departments are equally busy. Year 9s work on hands-on creative projects, and the Sewell Centre hosts visiting artist exhibitions. Robotics is growing, with students competing in Vex robotics tournaments. The design engineering workshop is well-equipped, with computer suites and an electronics room.

For those drawn to the countryside, Radley has a countryside centre offering shooting, fishing, ferreting, and beagling. The school also welcomes charities working with brain-injured adults and excluded children. Other niche activities include remote-controlled car racing, model flying, and a military history society. A cookery school is also in the works.

Trips are a major highlight. Recent destinations include:

  • Honduras for biologists
  • Washington DC for A-level politics students
  • European cities for classicists, artists, rowers, and musicians
  • South Carolina for golfers
  • Mallorca for tennis players

With regards to sports, rugby, rowing, and cricket dominate. Every student plays rugby in Michaelmas term before choosing their preferred sport. Rowers (‘wet bobs’) compete in the Princess Elizabeth Cup at Henley, recently beating Eton in the semi-finals. Hockey and cricket (‘dry bobs’) are also strong, with Radley reaching the semi-finals at Rosslyn Park Sevens.

Football is played but sits behind rugby and hockey in popularity. Other options include real tennis, squash, badminton, and ultimate frisbee for those who prefer something different. Radley’s facilities include top-tier pitches, a rowing tank, a fishing lake, a boathouse, courts for every racquet sport, and a nine-hole golf course—plenty to keep students active.

Admissions Process: Entering Radley College

Radley College primarily admits students at 13+, with entry split between two routes:

  • Radley List (60%) – Families register their sons before the age of three.
  • Open Entry (40%) – Registration is open until the end of Year 5.

All applicants take the ISEB Pre-Test in Year 6, followed by interviews in the Michaelmas and Lent terms. Radley-list candidates are interviewed automatically, while open-entry applicants are shortlisted first.

From 2023, the assessment process was redesigned to focus more on potential rather than attainment, making it more accessible for students from primary schools, not just prep schools. Unconditional offers are made by the end of March in Year 6, and successful applicants then choose their Social (house). A waiting list is maintained for strong candidates who don’t receive an immediate offer.

16+ Entry

A small number of places are available for Sixth Form entry. Candidates sit two written exams and attend interviews, with offers made in December before GCSEs. Competition is high at all entry points.

Radley offers honorary scholarships in academics, art, drama, music, and sport at 13+. While scholarships don’t come with automatic fee discounts, financial support can be means-tested up to 115% of fees. Music scholars receive free lessons.

The school also holds back a few places for exceptional late applicants in Years 7 or 8.

SEN Support in Radley College

Radley College provides tailored support for students with special educational needs (SEN) to ensure they can thrive academically and personally.

The Learning Support Department works closely with teachers, housemasters, and parents to identify and support students who may need extra help. This includes those with specific learning difficulties (SpLD), ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, and other needs.

Support is delivered through individualised learning plans, one-on-one or small group sessions, and classroom adjustments. The school also helps students develop independent learning strategies to build confidence and manage their workload effectively.

Radley also follows JCQ guidelines for exam access arrangements, ensuring students receive appropriate accommodations such as extra time or the use of a laptop when necessary.

The staff are just wonderful. Each time I have called with a question the staff have been great. They go out of their way to help you. I am really looking forward to my son starting at the school. The encounters I have had with staff gives me confidence my son’s education is in safe hands.

I am a year 7 boy who was invited for the open day on Sunday March 12th, 2023. I was part of a group of students who had gotten past the ISEB (International Schools Examination Board) and the interview and later exam. In the open day, we were given a tour of the facilities, did team building activities, Music and Arts and Crafts lessons. We also fed the animals in their farm (sheep, ferrets, deers, beagles and more). To top it all off, there was a thirty minute Science session in their auditorium where two Science teachers performed extremely cool experiments and it was pretty fascinating. Then, we went home.
